In an explanation essay, you describe how or why something occurs, how it works, or what purpose it serves. In a persuasive essay you take a position for or against something and then you try to convince or persuade your audience to take the same position.
Make sure you know what your assignment requires and what points your instructor wants you to include.
This website offers possible topics for an explanation essay (they call it process analysis) http://grammar.about.com/od/developingessays/a/topicsprocanal.htm
Remember that your topic should be something you are interested in or passionate about. This will make it easier to explain and persuade. Here is a website from a university on possible persuasive topics. See if there is a topic that lends itself to explanation and persuasion.
For example you could explain recycling and then try to persuade people that mandatory recycling is a good idea.
Here is another website http://www.speech-topics-help.com/
If you are able to get to the library we have a reference book that lists topics 10,000Topics
