Fair Use: Fair Use is an exception in U.S. Copyright Law that allows, under certain conditions, free use of copyrighted works without the copyright owner's permission. Under this exception, a use is generally considered fair if it is beneficial to society without causing economic harm to the copyright owner. The distinction between fair use and infringement is not always clear or easily defined.
• There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may be taken safely without permission.
• Giving attribution to the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.
• And not all educational or non-profit uses are necessarily Fair Uses. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances in a specific case.
